New England Golf Communities
The New England states–Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts & Rhode Island– are fertile ground for golf and golf communities. While the winter can be challenging for following the sport, the other three seasons can be delightful.
My grandfather retired to the island of Martha’s Vineyard after more than four decades as as newspaper man and “played golf every day there wasn’t snow on the ground.” Dedicated golfers can find a way.
The Best Times for Golf
The summer months can be hot and dry with some humid weeks thrown in. Spring can be surprising and fall is glorious for golf. We are of the opinion that the best 6-8 weeks of the year run from September 1st to mid-to-late October.
The air is cool and crisp. The humidity has gone. And the light that shines across the fairways and greens is golden. In October, you can swim and play golf in New England golf communities during the day, and enjoy a fire to cozy up to at night.
Four Seasons Are the Reason
While Floridians boast of sunny days year round, New England golf communities and their residents counter that they enjoy all four seasons and the wonderful variety that comes with those changing scenes.
Some New England golf communities take advantage of those seasons with a varying slate of activities, especially those on or near mountains. Owl’s Nest in Thornton, NH, takes advantage of its White Mountains location and easy access to local ski resorts such as Compton Mountain, Waterville Valley and Black Bear Lodge.
Buyers considering New England golf communities want culture and medical facilities. Mass General Brigham in Boston is branching out across New England, providing convenient medical locations in outlying suburbs as far south as Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard.
If you’re considering a golf community in New England, here are some suggestions. And come back often as we continue to add more selections.–David Lott, Publisher
