Sandy’s Wrath: Boats roiled in Vineyard Haven Harbor, MA
Today’s Headlines
* Hurricane Sandy—How You Can Help
* Next Regular Issue, Tuesday, Nov. 6 (Election Day)
The tragic stories resulting from Hurricane Sandy continue to pour in—the woman whose two children were swept away by the swirling waters as she was trying to bang on the door of a home for shelter, the sinking of the HMS Bounty and the two crew lost at sea, the terrible devastation along the New Jersey shoreline, Staten Island and the city of New York itself.
Our hearts and prayers go out to those still homeless, underwater, and without food, shelter or power. However, while we may not be directly affected by the storm, there are many ways to help. Please read the list below to see where you might offer assistance.
• To make a donation to the American Red Cross to help others who were affected by this disaster, please visit http://www.redcross.org/charitable-donations. You can donate $10 by phone by texting the word REDCROSS to 90999
• 300 blood drives have been cancelled because of the storm and blood is in short supply. To make a blood donation appointment, visit www.redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
• To find an emergency food provider close to you at which to volunteer your time, visit njahc.org/food-pantries. These shelters, food pantries, and soup kitchens are experiencing high volume and could use your help
• The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) takes donations to rescue and shelter animals affected by the storm. The ASPCA is setting up a distribution center in Syracuse, NY, with 4,000 sheltering units, which contain pet food, crates, food bowls, toys and accessories
• The Salvation Army: You can donate $10 to the Salvation Army by texting “STORM” to 80888. If you are already volunteer-certified, you can sign up to help out with disaster relief
• AmeriCares: You can donate to AmeriCares’ relief fund to help the organization, which is distributing supplies to 130 clinics in the 13 states affected by Sandy
To Volunteer in New York City and New Jersey:
• Volunteers in New Jersey are being coordinated through an emergency response hotline, 1-800-JERSEY-7 (1-800-537-7397). Alternate numbers, for when the hotline isn’t staffed, include 609-775-5236 and 908-303-0471 or emails can be sent to Rowena.Madden@sos.state.nj.us.
• The New York City agency NYC Service is coordinating volunteers for various relief projects in New York City. Go to its Facebook page or email to nycservice@cityhall.nyc.gov with your name and email address.
