Eleey Takes Record Second Individual Title for Georgetown
Georgetown led from start to finish to capture the 2018 BIG EAST Women’s Golf Championship Presented by Jeep at the Callawassie Island Golf Club. The Hoya’s senior Jacquelyn Eleey took the individual title.
The BIG EAST title is the second straight for the Hoyas, who proved to be the deepest and most consistent squad in the field. The eventual champs started the final round in the face of windy conditions with an 11 stroke lead over second-place Seton Hall. The Hoyas increased their lead early in the day and maintained a comfortable distance ahead of the rest of the field, winning by 20 strokes.
The winning three-day score was 903 (+39). Seton Hall finished at 923, followed by Xavier (938), Butler (946), St. John’s (952) and Creighton (993).
Georgetown Executes a Winning Plan
“I can’t say how happy we are,” said Hoya coach Kate Schanuel. “We executed our plan all three days of the tournament. We stayed patient and respected the golf course. I’m so happy for our players.”
Georgetown and Seton Hall dominated the top of the individual leaderboard placing eight players among the top 11 finishers.
Individual champion Eleey finished with a six-over-par 222 over 54 holes. Teammate Christina Parsells and Butler’s Abigail Gleixner tied for second at 229, seven strokes behind Eleey. Parsells was the leader after two rounds.
Eleey, who also won medalist honors as a freshman, became the first person in league history to win two BIG EAST Women’s Golf titles. She finished her final round by chipping in from a bunker near the green on the 18th hole.
With its team title, Georgetown earns an automatic berth to the NCAA Championship.
The BIG EAST Men’s Golf Championship will be played at Callawassie Island Golf Club April 29-May 1.
