NEW JERSEY GOLF COMMUNITIES
Diversely and densely populated, New Jersey is known for its sweeping oceanfront, its rambling horse country and its sibling rivalry with neighboring New York—especially New York City.
The tone and atmosphere of the Garden State is plain-spoken, animated and self-deprecatingly humorous. Its famous sons and daughters range from Thomas Edison and Jack Nicholson to Grover Cleveland and Meryl Streep.
It was the first state to sign the Bill of Rights document and a decade later it hosted the famous pistol duel between Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton.

New Jersey Golf Clubs
The state’s golf courses are among the finest in country, if not the world. There are 200-plus 18-hole courses in New Jersey and its landmark clubs such as Baltusrol and Pine Valley are fixtures in the American golf pantheon.
New Jersey has hosted a total of 63 United States Golf Association championships, which is the third most of any state. No fewer than seven men’s U.S. Opens have been staged at Baltusrol by the USGA—which itself has a New Jersey home and headquarters, in the picturesque town of Liberty Corner.
New Jersey: An Equestrian Center
That part of the state is where you’ll find horse breeding farms and equestrian training centers. Indeed, New Jersey has the highest number of horses per capita in the U.S., with nearly 10 horses per 1,000 people.
It also has 176,000 acres of land devoted to equestrian activities, and an additional 46,000 acres for growing hay and grain for horses.
To see thoroughbreds in competition, racing enthusiasts fill the grandstands of Monmouth Park in the town of Oceanport. The famed racetrack’s marquee event is the Haskell Invitational, held in July.
The Giants & the Jets
America’s most popular spectator sport, NFL football, has New Jersey as a competitive venue twice over—the New York Giants and their rivals, the New York Jets, both play home games in MetLife Stadium, part of the Meadowlands Sports Complex.
For fans of pro hockey, the New Jersey Devils just celebrated 50 years as a successful NHL franchise, competing now in Newark’s modern Prudential Arena.
Retire to New Jersey: Tax Breaks & More
Retiring in New Jersey is a good choice for people who want to spend time in major cities, who enjoy coastal living, and who prefer a mild climate that still features all four seasons.
Day trips of all sorts are easy to arrange, given the 12 state parks and the beach options all along the beloved Jersey Shore.
The climate is more mild than many other East Coast states, with fewer effects from hurricanes than in places farther south and much warmer winters than states further north.
In fact, retiring in New Jersey can be advantageous in several different ways. From generous pension exclusions to breaks on property taxes, New Jersey aims to help older adults in retirement keep more of their hard-earned money. Social Security income is not taxed in New Jersey.
New Jersey Golf Communities
The natural quality of the state’s golf terrain is just one of many reasons New Jersey is an appropriate place for purchasing a fairway home.
Among the options is Greenbriar at Whittingham’s, close by two of New Jersey’s strongly rated public-access golf courses, Forsgate Country Club and Concordia Golf Club. The community is in Monroe Township, about one-third of the way from New York City down to Philadelphia.
Not far away in Middlesex County is Regency at Monroe, one of several 50-and-over New Jersey golf communities that feature an active lifestyle. It offers 1,200-plus homes with amenities that include a 9-hole golf course designed by Arnold Palmer.
Upscale Living at Westlake Golf & Country Club
Westlake Golf & Country Club is an active-adult community aimed at the home buyer who seeks an upscale lifestyle at an affordable price.
An active adult community, Westlake offers a wide array of social and recreational activities, including its core attraction—a resident-owned 18-hole championship golf course, crafted by the much-admired architect Arthur Hills.
Greenbriar Oceanaire is a gated, active adult community in the scenic Pinelands region of the state, close to the Atlantic and about 45 minutes north of Atlantic City. Designed by Arthur Hills and Steve Forrest, the 18-hole Oceanaire course opened in 2003.
Health & Wellness Resources
The state’s health and wellness resources are extensive and highly regarded.
Hackensack University Medical Center, a teaching hospital, is No. 1 on the U.S. News list of the state’s top hospitals. It is nationally ranked in eight adult and three pediatric specialties.
On the western side of the state, Morristown Medical Center gets the No. 2 spot on the U.S. News list, with national ranking in four adult specialties. Third on the list is Valley Hospital in Paramus.
