Mortgage News: U.S. mortgage rates jumped to the highest since September as investors speculated that the Federal Reserve will slow bond purchases aimed at keeping borrowing costs down, Bloomberg News said. Mortgage rates have climbed from a near-record lows in May as the Fed weighs how soon it should scale back its stimulus.

Purchases of new homes rebounded in October from the lowest level in more than a year, indicating buyers are starting to take higher rates in stride. New-home sales jumped 25% to a 444,000 annualized pace, following a 354,000 rate in the prior month that was the weakest since April 2012, the Commerce Department said Wednesday.–David Lott, Founder/Publisher

Mortgage Rate Watch: U.S. mortgage rates fell for the first time in three weeks as investors speculated that the Federal Reserve will hold off on tapering bond purchases that are bolstering the economy, Bloomberg News reported. The average rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage dropped to 4.22% from an eight-week high of 4.35%, Freddie Mac said in a statement today. 

The jump in borrowing costs from near-record lows in May has slowed the housing recovery by restraining buyer demand. Purchases of previously owned U.S. homes fell in October to the lowest level since June, the National Association of Realtors said yesterday.–David Lott, Founder/Publisher

Mortgage Rate Watch: Mortgage rates increased for a second consecutive week, with the benchmark 30-year fixed mortgage rate climbing to a 2-month high of 4.48%, according to Bankrate.com’s weekly national survey.
A reduction in homeowners’ negative equity, which had been limiting sales in markets hard hit by the housing crash, has enabled more people to list properties, according to Bloomberg News. More than 2.5 million homes have returned to positive equity, in which the property is worth more than what’s owed, in the three months through June as prices gained, according to CoreLogic.–David Lott, Founder/Publisher

Mortgage Watch: U.S. mortgage rates rose for a second week as reports of an improving economy spurred speculation that the Federal Reserve may slow stimulus efforts. The average rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage jumped to 4.35%, the highest in eight weeks, from 4.16%, Freddie Mac said in a statement today

Yields for 10-year Treasuries, a benchmark for home loans, jumped last week after data showed U.S. payrolls and gross domestic product grew more than economists projected. The Labor Department said employers added 204,000 jobs in October, a gain larger than the most optimistic forecast in a Bloomberg survey. —David Lott, Founder/Publisher

Mortgage Rate Watch: The average rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage climbed to 4.16% at the close of last week. Prices for single-family homes climbed in 88% of U.S. cities in the third quarter as buyers competed for limited inventories, according to the National Association of Realtors. The nationwide median price for a previously owned house rose 12.5% from a year earlier to $207,300, the group reported yesterday.

 

Contracts (USPHTMOM) to buy existing residences dropped the most in more than three years in September, the Realtors association said last week. Mortgage Rate Watch: U.S. mortgage rates rose slightly from a four-month low this week while an expanding recovery in home prices reduced affordability for some would-be buyers, Bloomberg News reports. The average rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage climbed to 4.16%  the week ended today from 4.1%, Freddie Mac said.
A jump in rates since May and home-price gains that are spreading to more areas of the U.S. have caused some buyers to hold back. But demand should pick up, if rates stay close to current levels, which are still near historic lows, said Gennadiy Goldberg, the U.S. strategist for TD Securities in New York. –David Lott, Founder/Publisher
