Mortgage Rate Watch: Fewer Americans than forecast signed contracts to buy previously owned homes in September, the fourth straight month of declines, as rising mortgage rates slowed momentum in the housing market, Bloomberg News reports.
For the week ended Aug. 22, the average rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage was 4.58%–the highest level since July 2011. However, it has since fallen, averaging 4.13%
for the week ended Oct. 24, according to Freddie Mac in McLean, Virginia.
Mortgage rates last month reached two-year highs, making some homeowners reluctant to put properties up for sale as they wait for prices to climb, leading to tight inventories. Those forces are pushing some would-be buyers to the sidelines and slowing the pace of recovery in real estate.

Mortgage Rate Watch: U.S. mortgage rates fell to a 4-month low after a weaker-than-expected jobs report drove investors to the safety of government bonds, reports Bloomberg News. The average rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage dropped to 4.13% the week ended today from 4.28%, according to Freddie Mac.

Mortgage rates have retreated from a 2-year high in August after the Federal Reserve signaled it needed more signs of lasting improvement in the economy before scaling back a stimulus plan aimed at lowering borrowing costs. —David Lott, Founder/Publisher

Mortgage Rate Watch: U.S. mortgage rates climbed for a second week, increasing borrowing costs as Congress voted to end the government shutdown, according to Bloomberg News. Freddie Mac stated that the average rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage rose to 4.28% from 4.23%.

 

The end of the fiscal impasse may give a boost to the  housing market, say economists. During the shutdown waits lengthened for some borrowers seeking mortgages backed by the FHA and Department of Agriculture, and confidence among U.S. homebuilders fell to a four-month low.–David Lott, Founder/Publisher
