> Callawassie Island, SC looks toward its fall calendar of member events with a number of new initiatives, including detailed planting and tending guidance from its Garden Club leadership. For residents who have spent most of their lives in Northern climates, the emphasis on autumn planting in the Lowcountry takes some getting used to.

Recommendations from the Garden Club include October planting of snapdragons and dianthus, which will bloom all year long. Also in the region, fall is the best time to plant shrubs, ferns, and shade plants, as well as such perennials as cone flowers, coreopsis, asters and cenna. Quail Ridge Co-Hosts Championship

Quail Ridge, FL: Hosts event on redesigned course.

> Quail Ridge Golf & Country Club, Boynton Beach FL recently co–hosted the 74th Florida Open Championship on its prestigious South Course, which was redesigned by architect Bobby Weed. The new South Course was in pristine condition for the event, which was won by J.C. Deacon with a 54-hole total of 206.

Central to the South Course redesign project was a reduction in irrigated, maintained turf, which was replaced with coquina-like screenings and pine straw. The striking visual contrast orients golfers on each tee as they contemplate the ribbons of emerald turf winding through the lighter screenings areas. Send me more information about Quail Ridge!

 

Desert Mountain Holds Benefits, Fundraisers

Nicklaus is working with ClubsHELP to marshal the resources of affluent golf and country clubs in this cause.

Golden Ocala Welcomes New Pastry Chef

> Golden Ocala Golf & Equestrian Club, Ocala FL and its World Equestrian Center Ocala just hired Yohann Le Bescond to serve as Executive Pastry Chef.

In this role, Le Bescond will contribute to the design of the new hotel’s pastry kitchen and oversee the creation of dessert menus at all five restaurants on the property as well as Emma’s Patisserie, the specialty pastry boutique inside the hotel.

Along with creative execution, Le Bescond will hire, train and manage all bakers and pastry chefs at the five locations on the World Equestrian Center Ocala property.

Although the World Equestrian Center Ocala doesn’t open until spring of 2021, LeBescond has already created a new dessert menu for Golden Ocala. Send me more information about Golden Ocala!

> Golden Ocala Golf & Equestrian Club, Ocala FL has sent out a reminder to area residents and other visitors about its unique Outdoor Gym Facility. Golden Ocala’s alternative outdoor gym complex provides fresh air and social distancing for safe and healthy fitness. It is equipped with pull-up bars, a parallel bar, balance beams, pushup bars, stall climbing bars, a sit-up chair, Roman chair and hanging rope climb.

It is designed to provide a type of training that machines cannot, using body weight versus plated weights and allowing the muscles to stretch as they are being exercised. The outdoor gym is open seven days a week from dawn to dusk. Guests can pay a daily or weekly fee to use these facilities. Send me more information about Golden Ocala!

Dataw Island Residents Save Land

> Dataw Island, SC recently announced that a group of its residents had purchased Oak Island, a parcel of land accessible only by water or by a bridge inside the community. The anonymous donors have donated Oak Island to the Dataw Island Owners Association, under a covenant assuring the land will be protected from development.

New Courses at The Concession

The Concession, FL: Two new courses open and ready for play.

> The Concession, Bradenton FL recently opened “The Gimme” par-3 course and the “Snake Acre” 18-hole putting course, two much-anticipated additions to its golf amenity,. The Gimme is a 9-hole par-3 designed by Chris Cochran and the team at Nicklaus Design. Tucked into a natural setting within walking distance of the club’s on-site lodging, it features replicas of some of golf’s most famous holes.

The 18-hole putting course, Snake Acre, is one of the largest putting courses in the state and is equipped with high–tech LED lighting for nighttime play. Construction cost for these additions was $2 million.  Send me more information about The Concession!
